Wang Chung nasce nel 1980 in Inghilterra dall'incontro tra Nick Feldman e Jack Hues, entrambi nati a metà anni cinquanta e cresciuti tra studi musicali ed esperienze sulla scena punk, comune amore per i Beatles compreso. Il gruppo si forma dopo vari tentativi precedenti, complice anche un annuncio pubblicato su Melody Maker. Il nome della band deriva dal lessico delle religioni orientali e significa letteralmente "campane che risuonano".
